Size and Storage
Firstly, you need to decide if you’re after a single person kayak or whether you require a 2 or even 3 person kayak? Do you require storage on the kayak for fishing or camping gear? Some kayaks have heaps of storage and already have rod holders built into them.
Shape
Also take into account the shape of the hull, the wider the hull the more stable it will be, this will be well suited to fishing but it does not track as well through the water. If the hull is quite narrow with a sharp V it will track through the water better creating more speed but will not be as stable, this is better suited to longer paddles and expeditions.
Kayak Accessories
- PFD - A level 50 PFD is most commonly used for its ease of movement but please check local regulations about requirements.
- Paddle - You have the choice between an offset or straight paddles. An offset paddle reduces the amount of movement required with your hands, which is ideal for longer trips reducing fatigue and the chance of getting blisters.
- Kayak Seat - A good quality seat with a backrest will provide support and comfort, allowing you to paddle for longer periods of time.
Hot Tip:
Kayak trollies are a great idea if you have to travel a long distance from your home or vehicle.
